Ingredients

1.5 oz.Dark Rum (or Brandy)
8 oz.Dark Beer
1 oz.Brown Sugar Syrup
1Egg
GarnishGrated Nutmeg

Directions

  • Combine the Rum and Brown Sugar Syrup in a Cup
  • Crack the Egg into another Glass and Beat
  • Pour the Beer in a Small Pot over low heat until it steams and froths
  • Pour the Warm Beer into the Glass with Rum
  • Pour that Glass into the Glass with Egg
  • Pour the back and forth between the Glasses until smooth
  • Pour the Contents into a Mug
  • Garnish with Grated Nutmeg

The Ale Flip is another old cocktail from 1600’s Colonial America. Like many other older cocktails, it was sometimes prescribed to treat various medical ailments such as insomnia and indigestion, which probably didn’t help that much.

The origins of the Illegal are a complete mystery. Nothing about this drink is against the law, but maybe it’s a reference to Prohibition, I don’t know. This is an Official IBA Cocktail.

The Café con Leche Flip, or “Coffee with milk” in English, is an alcoholic riff on a latté. The cocktail was invented by Sam Ross. The drink isn’t a traditional flip, as it contains dairy and only uses Egg Yolk instead of the whole Egg.

Brandy Flip (Hot and Cold)

To TopHot Water (or Hot Milk)

  • Combine the Brandy, Sugar and Egg in a Cocktail Shaker
  • Dry Shake vigorously for 20 seconds
  • Pour into a Mug
  • Top with Hot Water
  • Stir till combined
  • Garnish with Grated Nutmeg

Flips are some of the oldest Cocktails, originating in colonial America in the 1600’s. They were originally served hot, with Hot Water being used. Flips and Nogs are very similar, the main difference being that Nogs contain Cream. That distinction has faded in time as cream has started to be used in Flips.

The Midori Sour is less of a Sour and more of a Highball. It was invented sometime in the 1970’s and later became a staple of 80’s Night Clubs. If you want an actual Sour, below is a recipe for the 3-Ingredient Midori Sour.

The Pink Lady (no relation to the White Lady) is a prohibition cocktail with a reputation of being a “girly” cocktail. The drink shares a striking resemblance to the Clover Club.
